سبيل السلطان محمود– القاهرة - مصر

أنشأ سبيل السلطان محمود بشير أغا دار السعادة، وألحقه بمدرسة السلطان محمود، ويقع السبيل في الجهة الغربية من المدرسة.  ويتبع تخطيط هذا السبيل ما يسميه الأثريون بطراز الأسبلة العثماني، ويتكون من جزءين؛ الصهريج أسفل الأرض، ووظيفته القيام بتخزين المياه اللازمة لتزويد السبيل بالمياه، وقد قدرت الدراسات الحديثة كمية المياه التي كان يخزنها صهريج هذا السبيل سنويا بحوالي 917 متراً مكعباً، والجزء الثاني هو حجرة التسبيل وملحقاتها والتي تقع فوق سطح الأرض، وهي حجرة مستطيلة الشكل ذات واجهة مقوسة بها ثلاثة شبابيك للتسبيل وسبيلا مصاصة نحاسيين علي الجانبين.  وقد تميزت حجرة التسبيل من الداخل بأنها مبلطة بالرخام في الارضية, كما غشيت الأجزاء السفلية من الجدران بالرخام أيضاً، وغشيت الجدران في الأجزاء العلوية ببلاطات خزفية.

وظيفة الأسبلة المائية:

كان الاهتمام ببناء الأسبلة المائية عادة قديمة عند كل الملوك والسلاطين منذ القدم ، ولكن عند المسلمين أخذت طابعاً مميزاً بحيث سارع أهل الخير والأغنياء للتنافس فيما بينهم لعمل الخير ، ولذلك سارع السلاطين والأمراء والحكام على إنشاء الأسبلة المائية في الأزقة والطرقات وفي الأماكن العامة حتى يعم الخير ، وبذلك ينالون الأجر والثواب. وتتعدد وظائف  الأسبلة المائية إلا انها لم تقتصر على وظيفة توفير المياه للمارة فحسب؛ بل كانت لها وظيفة تعليمية، حيث كان يُلحق بها في الجزء العلوي منها في الطابق الثالث مكتب أو كُتَّابٌ ليتعلم فيه الصغار مبادئ القراءة والكتابة وتحفيظ القرآن الكريم، وقد استمر الجمع بين وظيفة السقاية والتعلم في بناء الأسبلة  المائية منذ فترة الحكم المملوكي، وهو الشيء الذي يعطي السبيل المصري خصوصيةً وتميزه عن الأسبلة  المائية الأخرى التي أُنشئت في معظم مدن العالم الإسلامي.
